1 John 2:28 – 3:24 – God’s Children Demonstrate Love
Do you remember your childhood? Kids can get up to mischievous things. Did you ever do the wrong thing in childhood? We are repeatedly told in this passage that we are children of God. We are also reminded in v7, ‘Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous’.
The author continues to encourage followers to love one another and remain in Him. He reminds us that even though we sin and fail to do this, Jesus went to the Cross to take away our sins. v5 ‘But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.’ The encouragement is to live out our faith in the way we obey God and love one another.
The author uses the example of Cain and Abel from Genesis 4. The hatred that Cain had for his righteous brother led him to murder. In every relationship, each of us have a choice in how we respond, to love or to hate. We can choose to live out our faith in the way we love one another.
Jesus demonstrated this for us, by demonstrating his love for us in his actions on the cross, v16 ‘Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another.’ As children of God we are encouraged to love, and to demonstrate that love in our actions. To show that we care for one another. ‘Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth’ v18. How will you demonstrate that love to others today?
