1 John 5: 1 – 21 Living under Christ
Several years ago, I had the privilege of travelling to the Holy Land. As we journeyed through the towns, I heard and reflected on the stories of Jesus. I was in awe that this was where Jesus lived and walked. And I was also grateful for my Sunday school teachers who first taught me those stories.
The author reminds us all again that ‘This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands’ (v2). This has been a reoccurring theme as we have journeyed through 1 John. The love God has for us, the knowledge that we are his children, should cause us to respond in love towards God and others. Jesus reminded us that all of the law and commands could be summarised as loving God with all we have, and loving others.
Indeed it is true, that ‘his commands are not burdensome’ (v3). They are about living in response to what God has done for us in Jesus. We are assured as followers of Jesus Christ that God has overcome the world, he has won the victory (V3-4), and we can have confidence to approach God and be heard (v13-15). We are not under the power of sin and death, but under the power of the true God, Jesus Christ. How well do you know Jesus? Do you follow him? Do you know the way he loved others and the way he lived in response to God’s command? Do you seek to love people in the same way and live like he did?
‘Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.’. Let us refocus ourselves on Jesus Christ, ‘he is the true God and eternal life’ (v20).
