Exodus 17 - The Good Shepherd
More grumbling by the Israelites today, and more provision from God. And then God protects His people from the attack on them by the Amalekites.
Moses’ staff was involved in both of these events. It was the same staff that he used back in chapter 7 to strike the Nile, which turned the water to blood and thereby brought about the first plague on Egypt. His staff is referred to as the ‘staff of God’ (v9).
God is being portrayed in this chapter as a good shepherd, guiding His people safely to the Promised Land.
Many years later, Jesus declared that ‘I am the good shepherd’. Just as God wanted His Old Testament people to rely on Him, Jesus wants us, His people, to rely on Him.
