1 Cor 3: 1-15 - The proof of the pudding is in the eating!

When I was approx. 8 years old I stayed with my gran for a few days. It was wonderful because I got to spend time with my cousins as well because they lived a short distance down the street and across the gully in the Blue Mountains. I have lots of fond memories of that short holiday with her and there were two specific ‘learnings’ for me: I learnt how to make a proper cup of tea, using tea pot and fine bone china (that’s why I like to make my own cuppa and prefer it in china cup) and I came to know about a favourite saying of my Gran. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating”. It’s a great way of saying, “If you want to see if the person is a good cook, have a taste of what they have cooked!”

I think if my gran was re-writing todays bible reading she would have that ‘saying’ in the reading, because that is exactly what Paul is advancing; You are not living as mature spiritual people because your actions demonstrate the very opposite to the spiritually mature actions that we would expect of people who are ‘spiritual’. Paul says “Indeed…you are still worldly, acting like mere humans because you display jealousy and quarrelling” (vs 3). To say “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” is to say that ones actions and words will be evidence of the degree to which you are actually ‘living by the Spirit’ (Vs 1-2).

Such living is important for us as disciples of Jesus Christ, and this ‘importance is demonstrated in the words of Paul “For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building” (vs 9) What an awesome responsibility and wonderful opportunity for us; God sees us as playing a significant part in his Kingdom work and, if we take on board the teaching from yesterdays devotion, the Spirit of God provides both wisdom and understanding so we know God better and also does the work of transforming us so that we are better placed to serve God in his Kingdom work. What is God laying on your heart today about your life and witness and what is God wanting to transform in your life? Give it over to Him now, and move from mere human to living by the Spirit (vs 1-2)
