2 Cor 11:16-33 – Weaknesses aren’t bad

September 17, 2018

Biting my nails. Running late. Over committed. Cutting people off. Proud. Off with the fairies. I don’t know about you, but I have not had a single job interview where I HAVEN’T been asked, ‘what are some of your weaknesses?’ Why though? Why do we get asked about our weaknesses? See what’s funny is that as a society I think we have mastered the art form of avoiding anything that paints us in a bad light. I think interviewers ask this question to see how self-aware we are of the areas in which need to grow. But also, to see how willing we are to be honest and up front with areas in which we haven’t got it all together.

So what do we do when we read Paul's statement in 2 Corinthians 11:30 where he declares, "If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness"?

We all have weaknesses. Some are humorous and some are serious. Some are known and some are deeply private. Either way, we have them. None of us are perfect. And that’s what Paul’s point is. God is the only perfect one, leaving no room for us to boast except in our weakness and God’s greatness. The beauty of boasting in our weaknesses is that we are accepting the facts of our brokenness, our fallenness while simultaneously clinging to our strong Lord and Saviour. What I love about Paul’s writings both in this passage and 2 Cor 12, is that he owns his weaknesses and chooses to look at them as a way of pointing people back to Jesus. Paul doesn’t pretend that his weaknesses don’t exist nor does he try and justify them as a strength. And this is where the challenge lies.

For all of us today, let’s remember that God knows us. There is no need to impress. He wants us. All of us. We are loved in our weakness by the One without weakness. So today… who are we going to share this joy with?
