The Pentecost is the day when the Holy Spirit was poured out. The word ‘Pentecost’ means the fiftieth day, counted from the day Jesus rose. After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to various people, and the He ascended to heaven. The Holy Spirit comes 10 days after Jesus’ ascension, and that is what is known as the Pentecost.
Verse 1 starts with “when the day of Pentecost came…”, and then followed by “suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven…” in verse 2. The Day of Pentecost in this passage refers to the Old Testament Pentecost, which at the time of Jesus was is a festival to celebrate firstfruits of their harvests. In this Acts passage, many Jews gathered to celebrate this festival which became known as Pentecost . The Holy Spirit was poured out on them when they were all together at Pentecost.
Jesus promises His disciples that those who believe in Him will be baptised with the Holy Spirit. The pouring of the Holy Spirit in this passage marks a new era in the history of God’s redemption and the beginning of the New Testament churches. As recorded in Acts, the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in church’s evangelism. The Pentecost experience signifies the beginning of the presence and guidance of the mighty Holy Spirit, which enables the church to fulfil Jesus’ commission of them to make disciples of all nations.
At the start of Acts, Jesus tells His disciples that they will receive power to preach the Gospel when the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Indeed, the disciples have completely changed since they received the Holy Spirit. Once they were weak, afraid, and lacked wisdom in understanding God’s Word. With the power of the Holy Spirit, they have incredible boldness to speak in front of thousands of people. The Holy Spirit also enables them to preach the Gospel effectively, by giving them the ability to inspire their audience. This is shown by the three thousand people who believed after listening to Peter’s testimony on the Pentecost (Acts 2:1-41). The pouring out of the Holy Spirit is God’s act that brings people to salvation. With the power of the Holy Spirit, countless people since the Pentecost Day have heard the Gospel of salvation, called on the name of the Lord, and been saved.
The Holy Spirit has been poured out on God’s churches who have been called to preach the Gospel. As members of the world wide church of God, how are you fulfilling God’s commission given to you? With boldness and wisdom from the Holy Spirit let us reach out to the lost the least and the last, that they might see the light of Christ and receive salvation and eternal life.
