Acts 9:32-42

October 26, 2018

Many years ago I watched a great movie called ‘Leap of Faith’. Jonas is a fraudulent faith healer, who uses all the tricks in the book to con the people attending his shows. But, in one town, there is a boy and his sister, and they believe, and in the midst of all the fraudulent showmanship, God actually heals the boy, in the name of Jesus.

What do you think about Jesus healing today?  I hear many stories of situations in less developed countries, where people in desperate need truly ask for miracle healing, and they receive it.  Just like at the beginning of Acts, where Peter and John declare the healing of Jesus, for the man born lame, so now, Aeneas, who had been paralysed and bedridden for eight years, is given the message of Jesus’ healing love.  “Jesus Christ heals you.  Get up and roll up your mat.”  This healing caused many people to turn of Jesus, and come to faith, in the region.   More than that, in Joppa, a town close by, Tabitha, a woman, a believer perhaps, who ‘was always doing good and helping the poor’, became sick and died.  Peter, came as a result of an urgent request.  What did they think that Peter could do?  Had they heard about the healing?  Did they think about what Jesus had done in his life regarding raising the life of the son of the widow, and Lazarus?  Peter prays at the bedside of Tabitha, and discerning the word from the Lord, says “Tabitha, get up.”   In response, there were many in Joppa, who heard the story, and came to also believe in Jesus as Lord.

I have only known 3 instances in my life, where God has told me to hold on in faith and trust for the miracle.  One was the pregnancy of a dear friend, one was a woman who had diagnosed a lump in the breast as cancer, and the last one was Ben’s brain tumour.  Do I believe Jesus heals today?  Absolutely!  How do I discern what to pray?  I always pray for healing, and let God be sovereign Lord, trusting in his will.  And occasionally, by faith, I know, like Peter, that this one is a ‘Leap of Faith’.  What is Jesus challenging you to believe about his capacity for the miraculous?
