Acts 11:1-18 - Faithful Testimony

October 29, 2018

One of the privileges we have in Christian community is sharing our stories. As a staff team we have a practice of sharing ‘Kingdom Breakthroughs’, small moments where we have seen God at work in our lives and the lives of those around us. Every time we do this as a team it refocuses my eyes on God, teaches me and makes me more aware of what he is doing in our world. It encourages me to praise him!

In this passage Peter is pulled aside by the believers in Jerusalem who heard he has been eating with the Gentiles. Peter retells the story we have looked at in Chapter 10. His testimony is clear, truthful, and relevant to his hearers. He testifies to the work God was doing through his Holy Spirit and joins that with the words of Jesus in Acts 1:5 to help the believers understand that this is what was always intended. Peter doesn’t use fancy words, it is not a well-rehearsed speech, nor was he given a platform or microphone. In response to questions, he simply speaks to what God did plainly and clearly. He then interprets what he experienced in the world through his knowledge of Jesus teaching. People understand, accept his testimony and praise God!

A couple of weeks ago in our morning services Mark, Rochelle and Andrew reflected on 1 Peter 3:15 and how they seek to be prepared to answer people who ask in their workplace. Peter in this passage demonstrates a natural sharing of his experience of God in the world, interpreted through his knowledge of Jesus teaching, to which people respond in acceptance and praise of God. Spend some time reflecting on what you have seen God doing in and around you. How might Jesus’ teaching help you to understand that experience? Ask God to give you an opportunity to share that experience with someone you encounter this week.
