The Right Things in the Right Place (Matthew 6:16-34)

What is important to me? Where is my treasure? Wherein lies the focus of my heart? Am I concerned about my home, my car, my finances? Are there dark shadowy places in my life where I do not allow the light of Christ to infiltrate? Am I “full of light” or “full of darkness”?

Jesus exhorts us not to be concerned about earthly things, the fabric of everyday life. Rather “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (6:33). Be sure of your primary focus: being in a right relationship with God. Look back at 5:8, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. By faith, I am a child of God, I live in a right relationship with him (John 1:12). Only the pure in heart can comprehend what this means.

When I am right with God, I am no longer worrying about the mundane things of life. I focus on God’s will for me.

As I approached retirement, I began to think about how I would fill the days. I remember being very conscious of my need to seek God’s will and to be obedient to his leading. I became very aware of God’s provision. He had a purpose for me, over the years He had enabled me to develop particular gifts, and now, He opened up opportunities for me to use my professional gifts to assist the development of library facilities in theological colleges around the world, in places I had never have dreamt of visiting.

It has been my experience that everything falls into place, when God has the right place in my heart, in my life. More than that, when God has the right place in my heart, I have nothing to fear or worry about. What might it look like for you today to “seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness?”
